A.E.W. LP Archaeological Heritage Field Director Position
The Nlaka’pamux Nation Tribal Council (NNTC) is dedicated to the protection, advancement and exercise of Nlaka’pamux title and rights. To carry out this mandate, part of our strategy has been to create legal entities including A.E.W. LP.
Our client, A.E.W. LP is seeking experienced Archaeological Field Directors for full-time, permanent positions.
This position offers considerable schedule flexibility, with work weeks during the field season generally consisting of four days on and three days off. You will undertake frequent fieldwork out of Lytton and other locations in the Southern Interior from April through November. The work location for office-based responsibilities is flexible.
AEW LP was formed in 2017 by NNTC member communities to carry out “on the ground” work related to archaeology, the environment and wildlife protection. This work has been made necessary by activities of others within the Nlaka’pamux homeland including transportation, mining, forestry, oil and gas, and utilities projects. The NNTC is not opposed to development within our homeland but developments and activities must be consistent with Nlaka’pamux title and rights. AEW LP is guided by the fundamental Nlaka’pamux law: Take care of the land and the land will take care of you.
AEW LP is a vehicle created to ensure work of the highest standard, controlled by the Nlaka’pamux, is done to protect and promote Nlaka’pamux title and rights:
Your primary duties will include both field- and office-based responsibilities, including planning, managing, directing, and reporting for heritage reconnaissance, archaeological assessments, and monitoring activities primarily associated with heritage stewardship and archaeological assessments involving the energy, transportation, forestry, and mining sectors. You will work with a skilled and experienced team of professionals and technicians, under the supervision of RPCAs. Candidates must be willing to work collaboratively with and accept direction from community members.
Specific duties and responsibilities will include:
Conducting background research and report review
Planning and logistics for field projects
Liaising with community members and NNTC personnel
Conducting survey and shovel testing
Recording and maintaining accurate field notes and photographic records
Collecting and logging GPS data
Site mapping using survey-grade equipment and/or chain and compass
Planning and executing evaluative unit excavations
Drawing EU profiles and recording layer characterization
Training and mentoring field crew
Submitting complete daily field paperwork to the Project Manager for approval
Preparing summary, interim, and final reports
Assisting with report mapping
Supervising more junior staff and other field workers where appropriate
Approving crew time sheets and project tracking
This challenging and rewarding opportunity will appeal to professionals with the following qualifications:
Possess a Graduate degree in Archaeology or Anthropology or an undergraduate degree with equivalent experience
Valid (or eligible for) Field Director status for the B.C. Interior region
B.C. based archaeological field school (or equivalent)
Four years demonstrated experience in B.C. heritage resource management (or equivalent)
Knowledge and experience in adhering to occupational health & safety practices
Strong technical, reporting and mapping skills
Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license and current First Aid certification (Level 1 minimum)
Eligibility for holding archaeological permits in the B.C. Interior is an asset
Experience with GPS (including Trimble units), GIS systems, and delivering RISC Archaeological training courses is desirable.
Other key qualities you will possess include self-motivation, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
