Spencer W. Schmidt Law Corporation

Live, work, and play on Southern Vancouver Island!

Situated in the heart of the scenic Cowichan Valley where wineries and culinary delights tantalize your senses, is the city of Duncan, BC. As a major business centre for the fishing, farming, forestry and tourism industries, as well as retail and professional services, Duncan serves as the economic hub for the Cowichan Region.  Affectionately known as the City of Totems, Duncan gains its rich heritage from the original inhabitants – the Cowichan Tribes. Less than an hour drive to both Victoria or Nanaimo and just a short float plane ferry ride from the Lower Mainland, the city boasts a blend of outdoors activities, a mild climate, and a strong sense of community.

Our client, Spencer W. Schmidt Law Corporation, is seeking an innovative thinker who is both responsive and friendly to fill a full-time Associate Solicitor position in their Duncan office.

Who Are They?

Engaged in business law, real estate law and estate planning and administration, Spencer W. Schmidt Law Corporation is a growing firm focused on making our client’s legal journey easy and fun. We aim to blow their minds with our processes and communication. We leverage technology so we can spend our time forging personal connections with our clients and giving them tailored legal advice. We are growing so that we can help more of the wonderful businesses and families in our special community.

At this law firm, the core values are predicated upon prioritizing family, relentlessly improving, giving where you live, straight talk and confident compliance.

Who Are You?

Well, first you are a lawyer who has been called to the bar for at least a year, with experience in conveyancing and either wills and estates or corporate law – though a thirty-year call is equally welcome. You are a high energy lawyer whose kind and empathetic nature is ready to try new ways to practice law and meet client needs. You are good humoured and might even be a bit goofy, definitely not too serious and enjoy the occasional reference to “The Office.” You have the confidence to take the lead on files but also the humility to recognize when you need help. You seek out ways to improve performance and are comfortable in seeking feedback.

 Schmidt Law Corp. is looking for a candidate who matches our values and is open to hiring someone with different career paths in mind. If you are:

·       a client/customer service and people oriented person who absolutely loves spending your day meeting clients, educating individuals and groups about important legal issues, and driving client matters in a predominantly supervisory capacity, rather than doing it largely yourself, we can offer you a role as our primary liaison with clients, acting as both a brand ambassador to the community and an advocate for clients within the firm;

·       an autonomous professional who loves getting into the minutiae of legal issues and is happiest advancing files and not worrying about where the next client is going to come from, we can offer you a role as an associate or of counsel who can drive forward files and help monitor our internal standards of quality;

·       or possibly a family lawyer, who is looking to set up your own practice, and believes that family law services should be a comfortable and accessible, we are interested in expanding our service areas to meet a massively underserved segment of the Cowichan Valley’s legal needs; then this role and the 9-5 lifestyle may be for you!

Schmidt Law Corp. operates on the traditional lands of the Cowichan Tribes, and in keeping with the organization’s values that demand support for Indigenous peoples, we strongly encourage applications from Metis, Inuit or members of First Nations in Canada to help us be more representative of the experiences in our community.
