Come for the Lifestyle and Stay for the Job

The City of Powell River, “Coastal by Nature,” is pleased to announce they are searching for a skilled Manager of Recreation to join their dedicated team.

The Sunshine Coast of BC, long touted as a 180 KM stretch of paradise, gains its rich heritage from the original inhabitants – the Coast Salish people. It is a contemporary hub that balances abundant, natural beauty and a surplus of adventure with growing industry sectors in technology, retail and tourism. Located just a 90-minute ferry away from Vancouver Island, within the traditional territory of the Tla'amin First Nation, Powell River, offers a mix of urban and rural living in a naturally beautiful setting.

The City of Powell River is seeking an energetic leader to oversee the operations of the Recreation Department. As the ideal Manager of Recreation, you will come with a background in parks and recreation leadership, thorough knowledge in capital and operational budgeting, and a familiarity with applicable government regulations including WorkSafe BC and Technical Safety of BC. You are responsible for managing, directly or through subordinates, municipal services and facilities including the Recreation Complex, Dwight Hall, Willingdon Beach Campsite, and the parks and sports fields.  Reporting to the Director of Parks, Recreation, and Culture and liaising with all other City departments you will ensure a coordinated effort in the delivery of services and events.

You bring high quality professional standards and practices with your experience in recreation, as well as supervisory experience to this role. As an innovative leader and strong communicator, you will manage, oversee, review, staff, plan, and coordinate the provision of City services for recreation, sports, cultural, and community programs and events, ensuring that program delivery meets standards of service excellence. You can effectively manage the department’s budget, administration, and records so sound financial acumen and conceptual planning skills are essential.

You have five years of supervisory experience in a unionized setting and a degree in Recreation Management or related field. You have a thorough knowledge of all aspects of municipal recreation and experience with computer software applications related to customer registration, facility scheduling, financial tracking, asset management, and marketing. A strong background in project management as well as a PMP designation, would be considered an asset. If you have the ability to effectively lead, coach and motivate staff in a team environment, this is a fantastic opportunity to serve the community of Powell River, be engaged in meaningful work, earn competitive compensation and live in a spectacular community with abundant natural beauty, water and mountain activities, cultural events, and community services.
