Stk'emlupsemc Te Secwepemc Nation (SSN) consists of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and Skeetchestn Indian Band, one of the seven historic “Divisions” of Secwepemc Nation. The Stk’emlúpsemc te Secwepemc Nation are responsible for Aboriginal Title and Rights on their Territory.

Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc Band is a progressive Band on the leading edge of self-sufficiency for their approximate 1000 members (living both on and off the reserve). They pioneered Indian Property taxation and have created over 200 direct jobs and over $200 million of regional economic activity. The Band, which operates over 10 corporations, added 20,000 acres of fee simple land, and crown leases for resource development, partnerships with investors, entrepreneurs and other investment/economic opportunities. The SSN is the governing organization which deals with matters and projects within the SSN territory.

The Skeetchestn Indian Band is working towards self-reliance through education, as another key component of the Band’s strategy, as evidenced by the opening of the Skeetchestn Community School in 1996. They also have the Knucwentwécw Development Corporation, which manages several ventures including the Big Sky Gas Station, Trailer Park, Sk7ain Ventures, Skeetchestn Holdings, Painted Rock Aggregates and a Movie Set. Other future projects may include a cultural interpretive centre and a restaurant. Cultural and sporting events such as pow wows and annual rodeos are important to the community.

The Director of Operations

Under the direction of the SSN Joint Chief and Council, the Director of Operations will perform a critical role defining leadership initiatives that will impact this organization’s success. Specifically, your mandate will be to facilitate collaborative relationships with other First Nations executives, Councils, government officials and Industry decision makers. The longer-term objective for you will be to implement key initiatives and will heavily influence the degree of success of specific objectives collaboratively set out by the Joint Chief and Council. The Director of Operations role is ideally suited to a seasoned business manager who has a demonstrated track record in facilitating diverse political and economic interests, bringing new initiatives into play and who has both for and not-for-profit business experience.

What Skills, Competencies and Experience Does the Director of Operations Possess? 

You have excellent leadership, strategic thinking, interpersonal and communication skills coupled with advanced judgement capabilities and decision-making abilities. You have strong budgeting and financial skills. You must possess a strong understanding of Secwepemc culture, tradition and history as well as a strong understanding of and experience with, First Nations Title and Rights. You are results oriented and pursue excellence while achieving outcomes that exceed requirements. You are intrinsically motivated and improve performance or operational activities by trying new things and looking at opportunities to bring a new approach to the status quo. 

Preferably you have five to seven years’ experience of similar work experience and a degree in Business or Commerce, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A class 5 Driver’s Licence is required. Extensive experience in leading and motivating others is required.
