The City of Powell River, “Coastal by Nature,” is pleased to announce they are searching for a skilled Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture to join their dedicated team.

The Sunshine Coast of BC, long touted as a 180 KM stretch of paradise, gains its rich heritage from the original inhabitants – the Coast Salish people. It is a contemporary hub that balances abundant, natural beauty and a surplus of adventure with growing industry sectors in technology, retail and tourism. Located a 90-minute ferry away from Vancouver Island, within the traditional territory of the Tla'amin First Nation, Powell River, offers a mix of urban and rural living in a naturally beautiful setting. 

The City of Powell River is seeking an energetic leader to oversee and manage the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department. As the ideal Director you will come with a background in municipal planning, operation and administration of services and facilities to serve the community and its visitors. You are responsible for developing and managing, directly or through subordinates, municipal services and facilities including Recreation Complex, Dwight Hall, Willingdon Beach Campsite and the parks and sports fields.  Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and liaising with all other city departments you will ensure a coordinated effort in the delivery of services and events. You bring high quality professional standards and practices with your experience in recreation and community events, as well as supervisory experience to this role on the Management Team of the City. As an innovative leader and strong communicator, you ensure the provision of quality recreation, leisure, and cultural services for residents and visitors. This role provides short and long-range planning for the department and participates in the overall strategic direction for the City. You are a strong leader with the ability to motivate and manage your diverse team including recruitment, evaluation, performance, and attendance management.  You are able to effectively manage the department’s budget, administration, and records so sound financial acumen and conceptual planning skills are essential.

You have ten years of supervisory experience in a unionized setting and a degree in Recreation Management, Public Administration or Business Administration. You have a thorough knowledge of all aspects of municipal recreation and culture servicing and requirements as well as project management experience with tenders, RFPs, and contracts. If you possess strong problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation skills, this is a fantastic opportunity to serve the community of Powell River, be engaged in meaningful work, earn competitive compensation and live in a spectacular community with abundant natural beauty, water and mountain activities, cultural events, and community services.
